Game 15 - Argos 28 Eskimos 23
Monday, Ricky Williams and John Avery proved two heads are indeed better than one.Williams and Avery combined for 137 yards rushing in their first game together as the Toronto Argonauts withstood a 189-yard rushing performance by Edmonton's Troy Davis to beat the Eskimos 28-23 on Monday and cement a CFL playoff berth.
Williams and Avery both spent time playing tailback with Toronto, but injuries prevented them from sharing the same backfield before Monday. The five-foot-10, 220-pound Williams lined up at fullback and rushed for 71 yards on seven carries while the five-foot-11, 185-pound Avery added 66 yards on 11 carries at tailback. But more importantly, Edmonton had to respect the run which in turn left Argos receivers in one-on-one coverage downfield.
That was especially evident in the first half when Argos quarterback Damon Allen brought the Rogers Centre gathering of 26,891 to its feet with touchdown strikes of 23 and 14 yards to Arland Bruce III in staking Toronto to a 25-9 half-time lead.
