Five Years Later: The Salvation Army’s Response to The 9/11 Attacks

On September 11, 2001, a series of coordinated terrorist attacks on passenger airliners left thousands dead and hundreds of thousands more in need.Since the tragic events of 9/11, The Salvation Army has been closely involved with the recovery process of survivors in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington. Five years later, The Salvation Army remembers the victims and survivors of 9/11.

Arriving within a half-hour of the first plane hitting the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City, The Salvation Army was the first relief organization to arrive on the scene at “Ground Zero” and provided extensive support for relief workers and volunteers. The Army continued to support the recovery effort throughout the months-long clean-up process. Over the long term, The Salvation Army assisted thousands of people impacted by the September 11 attacks with practical assistance as well as spiritual and emotional care. This activity continues to this day.

On September 11, 2001, I was sitting at my desk in Calgary, AB and my telephone rang. The secretary said, "Major, the President of West Jet is on line 1 ."

I picked up the call, "This is Frank, the President of West Jet. Please come to the Airport. We need the Sallyann."

My wife & I were at the Airport ASAP endeavoring to comfort the emotional & Spiritual needs of both the passengers & staff of West Jet and other airlines as well.

It was a privilege to be a part minstry for the next few days with fellow Officers & airport pastoral care personnel!

My prayer is that God will continue to minister to the needs of the families who have lost loved ones and friends as a result of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
